May 16The Horse Lover: A Cowboy’s Quest to Save the Wild Mustangs by H. Alan Day with Lynn Wiese Sneyd, 264 pages

“He already owned and managed two ranches and needed about a third as much as he needed a permanent migraine: that’s what Alan Day said every time his friend pestered him about an old ranch in South Dakota. But in short order, he proudly owned 35,000 pristine grassy acres. The opportunity then dropped into his lap to establish a sanctuary for unadoptable wild horses previously warehoused by the Bureau of Land Management. After Day successfully lobbied Congress, those acres became Mustang Meadows Ranch, the first government-sponsored wild horse sanctuary established in the United States.
The Horse Lover is Day’s personal history of the sanctuary’s vast enterprise, with its surprises and pleasures and its plentiful dangers, frustrations, and heartbreak. Day’s deep connection with the animals in his care is clear from the outset, as is his maverick philosophy of horse-whispering, with which he trained fifteen hundred wild horses. The Horse Lover weaves together Day’s recollections of his cowboying adventures astride some of his best horses, all of which taught him indispensable lessons about loyalty, perseverance, and hope. This heartfelt memoir reveals the Herculean task of balancing the requirements of the government with the needs of wild horses.”

Apr. 18Mary Jane Safford, MD: Indomitable Mite by Elizabeth Coachman, MD, 174 page

“This is the first comprehensive biography of 19th century physician, writer, feminist, progressive reformer and lecturer Dr. Mary Jane Safford who led an extraordinarily adventurous life. Her uncanny ability to appear in the right places and times to experience and make true history was akin to Forrest Gump’s similar but fictional talent. From the poverty of youth and through a series of adventures leading to her becoming a European-trained, gynecologic surgeon, Dr. Safford rose to a fame larger than life. She spoke and wrote prolifically on travel, progressive reforms, racial equality and medicine. Among her associates were notable 19th century figures. Later in life, she became one of Florida’s first trained women physicians and helped found a Florida community. Dr. Coachman’s 10-year research odyssey has led to rediscovery of Dr. Safford’s most intriguing life story.”

Mar. 16 – The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin, 322 pages

“Life is short. No-one knows that better than seventeen-year-old Lenni living on the terminal ward. But as she is about to learn, it’s not only what you make of life that matters, but who you share it with.

Dodging doctor’s orders, she joins an art class where she bumps into fellow patient Margot, a rebel-hearted eighty-three-year-old from the next ward. Their bond is instant as they realize that together they have lived an astonishing one hundred years.

To celebrate their shared century, they decide to paint their life stories: of growing old and staying young, of giving joy, of receiving kindness, of losing love, of finding the person who is everything.

As their extraordinary friendship deepens, it becomes vividly clear that life is not done with Lenni and Margot yet.

Fiercely alive, disarmingly funny and brimming with tenderness, THE ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF LENNI AND MARGOT unwraps the extraordinary gift of life even when it is about to be taken away, and revels in our infinite capacity for friendship and love when we need them most.”

Feb. 15Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz, 496 pages.

“Alan Conway is a bestselling crime writer. His editor, Susan Ryeland, has worked with him for years, and she’s intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. Alan’s traditional formula pays homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. It’s proved hugely successful. So successful that Susan must continue to put up with his troubling behavior if she wants to keep her job.

When Susan receives Alan’s latest manuscript, in which Atticus Pünd investigates a murder at Pye Hall, an English manor house, she has no reason to think it will be any different from the others. There will be dead bodies, a cast of intriguing suspects, and plenty of red herrings and clues. But the more Susan reads, the more she realizes that there’s another story hidden in the pages of the manuscript—one of ambition, jealousy, and greed—and that soon it will lead to murder.

Masterful, clever, and ruthlessly suspenseful, Magpie Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage crime fiction.”

Jan. 18 –The Poisoner’s Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York by Deborah Blum, 336 pages

Deborah Blum, writing with the high style and skill for suspense that is characteristic of the very best mystery fiction, shares the untold story of how poison rocked Jazz Age New York City. In The Poisoner’s Handbook Blum draws from highly original research to track the fascinating, perilous days when a pair of forensic scientists began their trailblazing chemical detective work, fighting to end an era when untraceable poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime.

Drama unfolds case by case as the heroes of The Poisoner’s Handbook—chief medical examiner Charles Norris and toxicologist Alexander Gettler—investigate a family mysteriously stricken bald, Barnum and Bailey’s Famous Blue Man, factory workers with crumbling bones, a diner serving poisoned pies, and many others. Each case presents a deadly new puzzle and Norris and Gettler work with a creativity that rivals that of the most imaginative murderer, creating revolutionary experiments to tease out even the wiliest compounds from human tissue. Yet in the tricky game of toxins, even science can’t always be trusted, as proven when one of Gettler’s experiments erroneously sets free a suburban housewife later nicknamed “America’s Lucretia Borgia” to continue her nefarious work.

From the vantage of Norris and Gettler’s laboratory in the infamous Bellevue Hospital it becomes clear that killers aren’t the only toxic threat to New Yorkers. Modern life has created a kind of poison playground, and danger lurks around every corner. Automobiles choke the city streets with carbon monoxide; potent compounds, such as morphine, can be found on store shelves in products ranging from pesticides to cosmetics. Prohibition incites a chemist’s war between bootleggers and government chemists while in Gotham’s crowded speakeasies each round of cocktails becomes a game of Russian roulette. Norris and Gettler triumph over seemingly unbeatable odds to become the pioneers of forensic chemistry and the gatekeepers of justice during a remarkably deadly time. A beguiling concoction that is equal parts true crime, twentieth-century history, and science thriller, The Poisoner’s Handbook is a page-turning account of a forgotten New York.

a) Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb, 432 pages

“Ever wonder what your therapist is thinking? Now you can find out, as therapist and New York Times bestselling author Lori Gottlieb takes us behind the scenes of her practice ― where her patients are looking for answers (and so is she). When a personal crisis causes her world to come crashing down, Lori Gottlieb ― an experienced therapist with a thriving practice in Los Angeles ― is suddenly adrift. Enter Wendell, himself a veteran therapist with an unconventional style, whose sessions with Gottlieb will prove transformative for her.”

b) The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, 128 pages

From the Author: “I began writing very early — poems, plays, stories — and just never quit. I attended local schools and then, being both book-struck and stage-struck, found a college — Allegheny College — where I could satisfy both passions.

I’ve been a short story writer, with some forty-fifty stories in McCall’s, Ladies’ Home Journal, Redbook, etc.; a playwright; an occasional poet, and finally and most happily, an author of children’s books…happily, because there’s no greater audience than boys and girls who read books and demand that those books be the most exciting, the most mysterious, the most touching, the funniest…the Best.

I live and write in a suburb of Philadelphia, and I have two daughters — Carolyn, who is a nurse, and Marjorie, who is a sixth-grade teacher and at home now with my grandchildren Tomas and Marcos, and all these people read books like crazy!”

Nov. 16 – Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story by Wilfred M. McClay, 504 page.

“We have a glut of text and trade books on American history. But what we don’t have is a compact, inexpensive, authoritative, and compulsively readable book that will offer to American readers a clear, informative, and inspiring narrative account of their own country. Such an account can shape and deepen their sense of the land they inhabit and, by making them understand that land’s roots, and share in its memories, will equip them for the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship in American society. It will provide them with an enduring sense of membership in one of the greatest enterprises in human history: the exciting, perilous, and consequential story of their own country.

The existing texts simply fail to tell that story with energy and conviction. They are more likely to reflect the skeptical or partial outlook of specialized professional academic historians, an outlook that leads to a fragmented and fractured view of modern American society and fails to convey to American readers the greater arc of their own history. Or they disproportionately reflect the outlook of radical critics of American society, whose one-sided accounts lack the balance of a larger perspective and have had an enormous, and largely negative, effect upon the teaching of American history in American high schools and colleges.”

Oct. 19Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl, 192 pages

“Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl’s theory – known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos (“meaning”) – holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.”

Seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders are invited to participate in Confirmation, a deepening of their commitment to God through the Holy Spirit. We understand that this time in a teenager’s life is one of growth and upheaval, so we seek to help them strengthen and sustain their life-giving relationships with Christ. Confirmation classes and activities provide opportunities for prayer, community, worship, and service that go beyond our regular adult-centered Sunday morning worship to connect youth with each other and with Christ in a way that is most meaningful to them.

Saint Barnabas has the only two-year Episcopal Confirmation program in the state of Arizona.

Confirmation groups meet Wednesday nights from 6:45- 8:00 in the Other Cup. Youth are confirmed sometime after their two-year completion, depending on when the Bishop visits our parish.

We invite anyone interested in learning more about confirmation, or about volunteering as an adult leader, to contact the Director of Youth Ministries, Kate Fimbres.

Saturday, August 12, 9:30 – 1pm | Sanctuary + Z_o_o_m

The Grace of Pentecost Part III

The gift of the Spirit at Pentecost calls us and empowers us to integrate the active and contemplative dimensions of reality within us and around us. Living into this calling includes letting go of the obstacles within us to the awakening to a new seeing, not just what we see but how we see. We are learning to live ordinary life extraordinarily. August’s quiet day will explore living into the grace of Pentecost.

Rest in the peace of God on Quiet Day with Rev. Jim

The contemplative life is actually quite simple and accessible to everyone. It is simply the intention to pause, to be still, and, by faith, to rest in Christ’s presence within. Quiet Day includes reflections by Rev. Jim, quiet solitary time, and sessions of communal silent prayer in the Sanctuary. Participants are welcome to the Sanctuary, to quiet areas for reading or journaling, or to walk our beautiful campus. The day concludes with Holy Eucharist. Please bring your Bible.

Z_o_o_m credentials are sent via email. Not on our mailing list? Contact Ann Hott if you would like to be included. All are Welcome!

Students and teachers of ALL ages are invited to bring backpacks, bags, and briefcases to church to be blessed with a special liturgy during worship. Join us for a celebration of learning and teaching! All are welcome.

This year we will also be blessing more than 100 backpacks that will soon make their way to children in Ensenada, Mexico. Our Mexico Medical Mission team has filled the backpacks with supplies.

Infant and toddler nursery will be available in The Children’s Center. For Saint Barnabas family registration, click here.

For more information contact Sarah Petersen.

Prayer

God of Wisdom, as we begin another school year I pause to ask for your blessing on all aspects of my life. I give you thanks for my school, my teachers, and my friends. I am grateful for pencils, crayons, notebooks, and for your gift of learning. Bless us all with curiosity, understanding, and respect. And bless my teachers, who support and encourage me and my friends. In this time of new beginnings, I ask your blessing on all of us learning how to learn online and outside our usual classrooms, and a blessing on the many devices we use to connect with our neighbors in a changing world. All this I ask in the name of Jesus, who as a child in the temple showed his longing to learn about you, and as an adult taught by story and example your great love for us. Amen

As part of a network of area churches, we partner with Family Promise and host families who are transitioning out of homelessness for a week at a time, 3-4 times per year, right here at Saint Barnabas. During that week, we provide lodging, all meals, and lots of fellowship and encouragement for Family Promise families and their children. Family Promise is one of only a few programs that work intentionally to keep families together as they experience homelessness, and their model has a 70% success rate.

You can help in lots of ways: plan and/or cook a meal, donate food, stay overnight as a contact in case any needs arise (we prepare you and give you separate sleeping quarters), bring an activity for children to do, play music or a movie to encourage rest and joy, donate travel sizes of toiletries that families can take with them, or simply be a friend to our guests. Serve and get to know families on their journey back to stability and homeFULLness.

Please contact Jane Gharibian  or Tom Tischer at (480) 231-0782 for information.

Sunday, July 16 – Friday, July 21 | Ensenada, Mexico
We are excited to return to our medical mission ministry in Ensenada, Mexico. Our team will be made up of parishioners, Mayo Clinic and other medical providers and long term mission workers. We will establish our full clinic including nursing triage, medical providers, pharmacy, optometry, dental, children’s programming and a commissary for all of our patients. This special trip allows the team to provide medical assistance and especially the overarching sense of love and respect for each patient entering our clinic. If you are interested, please contact the valley-wide coordinator: Cindy Carter at 480.639.7551
Please Donate!

The items you most generously donate to the Medical Mission to Mexico are items we often take for granted to have and usually have in abundance.

  • Soap – an everyday item we use to clean our hands and bodies that not everyone has access to on a regular basis
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste – for both adults and children, giving access to dental health care
  • Eyeglasses – your used glasses and sunglasses can help provide needed sight improvement and can be fitted to the individual in need
  • Hats – we sure do understand the need to be protected from the sun and this is a great need in Mexico!
  • Shoes – imagine walking without shoes in the summer heat!

NEW REQUEST: T-shirts (all sizes, youth and adult)

Thank you for considering your gifts of any of these much needed items! These can be dropped off on Sunday in the boxes designated for the Mexico Medical Mission or to our church office during the week.

You can also make a monetary donation by clicking here.

Saturday, July 8, 9:30 – 1pm | Sanctuary + Zoom

– The Grace of Pentecost Part II –

Our awakening to the Spirit within consciously connects us to the Presence of I AM. The One from Whom the cosmos emerges, is sustained by, and exists within moment by moment. Saint Paul tells us this is the energy that raised Jesus from the dead. The season of Pentecost focuses on our learning to live, move, and have our being in this energy, the Holy Spirit. July’s quiet day will offer reflections on how to live in the Spirit.

Ingathering

Sunday, May 7 | Both Services

United Thank Offering is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. The blue boxes are used as a way to give thanks daily. On May 7, we will gather our boxes, bless them, and send them off to places near and far to reach those in need, including within our own diocese. Pick up another one to fill with your daily gratitude again! This is a meaningful practice for all ages and children are invited to participate. You can find out more about UTO’s global work at THIS LINK. Thank you!

UTO Prayer
Gracious God, source of all creation, all love, all true joy: accept, we pray, these outward signs of our profound and continuing thankfulness for all of life. Bless those who will benefit from these gifts through the outreach of the United Thank Offering, and keep each of us ever thankful for all the blessings of joy and challenges that come our way; through Him who is the greatest gift and blessing of all, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Foundations of the Practice

Saturday April 22, 9:30 – 1:30 pm | In our Saint Barnabas Chapel

Led by Rev. Jim Clark, Liza Bell, and Debbie Moore

Followed by:

Five Wednesday evening sessions (online)

“Intimacy with God” | 7:00-8:30pm | Z_o_o_m

*More than a meditation technique, Centering Prayer is a uniquely Christian practice of consenting to God’s presence and action within. During Centering Prayer, we learn to gently return our chattering minds, again and again, to our intention of just allowing God to love us. With consistent practice, we notice a growing sense of presence and peace infusing more of our waking hours. As God does God’s patient work within us, we gradually begin to transform habits and behaviors that have limited our ability to be the hands of Christ in the world.

“And the deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is beyond words, and it is beyond speech, and it is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity. We discover an older unity. Citizens, we are already one. But we imagine that we are not. So what we have to recover is our original unity. Who we have to be is who we are.” -Thomas Merton

The program is ecumenical and free of charge, but registration is required.

To register, contact Liza Bell.

WHAT IS EASTER?

This joyous season starts with Easter Day as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter season then continues for 50 days. Throughout this time, we hear the stories of how Jesus appeared to his followers in many ways after his resurrection; we hear what he taught them about how to live, and how to carry on without him. During this time, we also celebrate his Ascension into heaven (which Saint Barnabas also likes to move to a Sunday so we don’t miss the celebration!). This is followed by the arrival of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrate on Pentecost.

All are welcome to join us for this joyous celebration.

This unique service takes us literally out of the darkness of the tomb into the new light of Christ. We light the new fire to illustrate how Jesus’ light can never be extinguished fully. We carry the new light as we recall the many ways over time that God has saved us. During this service, we will witness the retelling of several sacred stories by some of the children of Saint Barnabas. Then we celebrate the bursting forth from the darkness in the Easter moment. This is the original Easter celebration. A dessert and appetizer feast will follow in Hutton Hall. One not to be missed!

The First Service of Easter is the day before our Easter Day worship, which takes place on Sunday, April 9 at 7am, 9am, and 11am MST both in-person (and online at 9am). For more information, please click here.

From Gethsemane to the Tomb

Reflecting on the Passion of Jesus

Saturday, April 8, 9:30 – 12:30pm* | Sanctuary + Zoom

The contemplative life is actually quite simple and accessible to everyone. It is simply the intention to pause, to be still, and, by faith, to rest in Christ’s presence within. Quiet Days includes reflections, usually by The Rev. Jim Clark, quiet solitary time, and sessions of communal silent prayer in the Sanctuary. Participants are welcome to the Sanctuary, to quiet areas for reading or journaling, or to walk our beautiful grounds. This month, we will offer an opportunity to reflect on Jesus’ Passion. As it is Holy Saturday, we will not celebrate Eucharist. Please bring your Bible. All are welcome.

Please note: April 8 is Holy Saturday, so we will not celebrate Eucharist during our April Quiet Day.

WHAT IS PALM SUNDAY?

Palm Sunday is a Sunday filled with emotional highs and lows. Jesus rides into Jerusalem as the people line the road with palm branches. They toss their cloaks before him to acknowledge him as their King. The Roman authorities fear and despise Jesus. They bring him to trial and crucify him.

On Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion we tell both stories. We acknowledge the highs and the lows so that Holy Week and Easter can be an acknowledgment of our brokenness and the surprise of joy. All are welcome.

Paul Found in His Letters https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/paul/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 23:45:10 +0000 https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/conversations-copy/ Continue reading Paul Found in His Letters]]> Lunch and Discussion with the Author

George Martin is an independent Pauline scholar and (more famously) father to Kate Fimbres, our Minister for Youth and Parish Life. The book, published in 2022 by Claremont Press, is the story of Paul in the history of the first century based on the seven letters all scholars agree he wrote. Martin explains why the accounts in the Book of Acts and in the Pastoral Epistles represent the “remembered Paul” coming decades after his letters. The letters reveal a different Paul in his own voice. With its unique focus on these seven letters this isn’t a biography of Paul, but it offers some amazing things about Paul in the context of Imperial Rome and pervasive slavery. This picture of Paul places women at his side as co-workers with him, and as active participants in leadership and worship. Paul’s travels that took him to Arabia and his desire to take the Gospel to Spain bring the history, economic, and social realities of the first century to the light of day. The book is available on Amazon.com (click here to purchase). After the discussion the author will be happy to sign books.

The journey through Lent into Easter is a journey with Jesus. We are baptized into his life, self-giving, and death; then, we rise in hope to life transformed. Beloved Community is a vision of the possibilities of the Reign of God in our lives as we work towards growing loving, liberating, life-giving relationships across the human family of God. Following in the footsteps of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Episcopal Church invites all to explore the long-term possibilities of reconciliation, justice, and healing across differences.

During the five Sundays of Lent, you are invited to join the clergy for a sacred time of learning, storytelling, and listening.  It is our hope that we will be open to God’s blessing and find ourselves growing into the vibrant life of the Christ we welcome and follow, this Lent and always.

All are welcome to participate even if you cannot attend all five weeks.

Join us in Hutton Hall or online. Z-o-o-m credentials will be available via our weekly email. Not receiving emails? Subscribe or call the church office. All are welcome.

A morning virtual event with James Finley, Ph.D. In our time together Dr. Finley will lead us in a prayerful reflection on the healing stories in the Gospels that reveal and heal the truth of us as God’s beloved. We will explore the mystery of God as a Presence that protects us from nothing yet unexplainably sustains us in all things.

Dr. Finley will walk us through spiritual dimensions of the Gospels, showing us how they can guide and empower us to heal the traumas in our minds and hearts. In doing so, we can open ourselves to the Gospels’ spiritual depth of healing and our innate mercy toward ourselves, others, and all living things. Come join us for an intimate conversation with Dr. Finley.

  • loss of a job or a dream
  • divorce

Join us on Sunday, March 5 to celebrate Chapel Rock Sunday! Chapel Rock, our diocesan camp and conference center, is located in Prescott and during the month of June hosts a variety of sleep-away camps for children and youth from all over the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. Our Diocese has a commitment that no child is ever turned away from camp due to lack of finances. Your financial contributions help support a child’s week-long experience of being part of a camp community. Campers meet new friends, learn more about God, and engage in a variety of fun activities including arts and crafts, rock climbing, and more.

Please consider making a donation to help support this incredible camp!  We will collect donations at our services on March 5.

Or you may donate on our website by going to saintbarnabas.org/give.  Please write Chapel Rock in the ‘other’ field when asked to designate your gift.

“What we do for the African American community benefits everybody. Anything that knocks down barriers is a good thing.” -Br. Lee Hughes, OP

Bl. (Blessed) Absalom Jones holds a special place in history as a pioneer in civil liberty and service. Born into slavery in Delaware in 1746, Jones purchased freedom for his family and began attending St. George’s Methodist Episcopal congregation which was, nominally, an interracial congregation. However, one Sunday, African American congregants were asked to move from their seats on the first floor to the upper balcony – where they would not be seen. Following this incident, Jones left the congregation but continued to be an active member of the Episcopal Church, going on to be ordained as the first African-American Episcopal priest.

Since his death on February 13, 1818, commemorating the Feast Day of Absalom Jones is one symbolic step we can take as a community toward ensuring that such treatment of African Americans – or any “other” group – is not only never repeated but that we proactively and continuously course-correct to avoid it, always striving to improve equality, fairness and representation for all people.

A celebration of Jones’s Feast Day will take place in the Sanctuary. The service of liturgy and Holy Eucharist is hosted by The Karl and Virginia Washington Arizona Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, in partnership with the Episcopal Church’s Diocese of Arizona.

The Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie

The Rt. Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall, sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona, will preside over the service, with a message from guest preacher the Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie, who grew up in Johannesburg under apartheid. Music by Saint Barnabas featuring Ms. Jackie Island of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Phoenix who will sing “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.”

This event will be open to all. Questions? Contact Br. Lee Hughes, OP.

Meet Our Nominees for Vestry and Diocesan Convention

As prescribed by our bylaws, the Vestry Nominating Committee, led by Chair Karen Steckler, has produced a slate of nominees this fall to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Episcopal Parish of Saint Barnabas on the Desert on January 22, 2023 at 11:30am in Hutton Hall. We are blessed by the dedication of these parishioners to their church. When you see them on our grounds, thank them for their service!

Ten parishioners are nominated to serve as 2023 Diocesan Convention delegates and alternates. Nominees to attend the 2023 convention as Delegates: Margaret Beresford, Larry Erickson, Willie Francis, Gretchen Kitchel, and Ed Wimmer. Nominated as alternates (voting in the event a Delegate is unable to serve): Suzy Erickson, Shan Francis, Matt Owens, Fran Patton, and Judie Wimmer. In addition to these elected roles, Rector Jim Clark has named Don Henninger to continue as our Senior Warden.

Here is the list of the Vestry Candidates for 2023/2024/2025.

Meet the four parishioners nominated for service on the Saint Barnabas Vestry:

Nancy Burton

I joined Saint Barnabas in 2019 after we moved to Scottsdale from Ohio. The church offers a place for me to feel at home with its friendly community, social activities, and faith education. I especially like the worship services, music and concerts, and group studies including EfM and TAEHS. I look forward to our fellowship, growing together in faith, and serving at Saint Barnabas.

Dan Colton

I have been a member of Saint Barnabas since 1967, when my family moved to Arizona from Indiana. I’ve been active in various facets of the church, including serving as Chair of  the Building and Grounds Committee for 14 years (1996-2010) and now serving as a committee member. I previously served as vestry member from 2002-2005.

Peggy Iacobelli

I have been married to cradle Episcopalian, Dirck, for almost 49 years. As a family, we have been members of Saint Barnabas since the fall of 1982, and I was confirmed here in 1984. I have been a member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee,  a youth group coordinator, and served on the ECW board and the diocesan ECW Board. I have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Family Promise. I was a founding member of the Bell Choir, and am happy to be playing with them again. I am Chair of the Memorial Acceptance and Fine Arts Committee and I served on the Vestry previously from 2000-2003.

Frank Nightingale

It has been a tremendous blessing to attend Saint Barnabas for nearly ten years. We are called to be disciples of Christ. The people of our parish, our superb Clergy, our ministries, dedicated staff, and unmatched grounds make that call easy! It would be a honor to serve on the Saint Barnabas Vestry.

Epiphany and the Transformation of Consciousness

The season of The Epiphany begins with the story of the Magi and ends with the Transfiguration of Jesus. Both stories are meant to move us beyond our normal seeing. Saint Paul invites the same when he prays … that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be so strengthened that you come to know the love that surpasses knowing. On this quiet day, we will explore how the practices of silence, the Lord’s Prayer, and praying the scriptures can remove our inner obstacles and open us more and more to boundless Presence, and boundless love.

“Tasting with intentionality invites us to develop our ability to be fully present in the moment, to enhance our awareness of the beauty and delight that surround us in our everyday lives, and to live more fully in a mindset of gratitude” – Tev. Dr. Cathernine C. Gregg

The Spirituality of Wine Tasting is a fundraising event for Christian Formation Direction Ministry Arizona. Guided by CFDM co-founder Rev. Dr. Catherine C. Gregg, a Level 3 Master Sommelier, attendees will experience the sights, scents, and flavors of six hand-picked wines, carefully paired with a delightful selection of hors d’oeuvres prepared by chef Kate Fimbres.
