Seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders are invited to participate in Confirmation, a deepening of their commitment to God through the Holy Spirit. We understand that this time in a teenager’s life is one of growth and upheaval, so we seek to help them strengthen and sustain their life-giving relationships with Christ. Confirmation classes and activities provide opportunities for prayer, community, worship, and service that go beyond our regular adult-centered Sunday morning worship to connect youth with each other and with Christ in a way that is most meaningful to them.

Saint Barnabas has the only two-year Episcopal Confirmation program in the state of Arizona.

Confirmation groups meet Wednesday nights from 6:45- 8:00 in the Other Cup. Youth are confirmed sometime after their two-year completion, depending on when the Bishop visits our parish.

We invite anyone interested in learning more about confirmation, or about volunteering as an adult leader, to contact the Director of Youth Ministries, Kate Fimbres.

The Grace of Pentecost Part III

The gift of the Spirit at Pentecost calls us and empowers us to integrate the active and contemplative dimensions of reality within us and around us. Living into this calling includes letting go of the obstacles within us to the awakening to a new seeing, not just what we see but how we see. We are learning to live ordinary life extraordinarily. August’s quiet day will explore living into the grace of Pentecost.

Rest in the peace of God on Quiet Day with Rev. Jim

The contemplative life is actually quite simple and accessible to everyone. It is simply the intention to pause, to be still, and, by faith, to rest in Christ’s presence within. Quiet Day includes reflections by Rev. Jim, quiet solitary time, and sessions of communal silent prayer in the Sanctuary. Participants are welcome to the Sanctuary, to quiet areas for reading or journaling, or to walk our beautiful campus. The day concludes with Holy Eucharist. Please bring your Bible.

– The Grace of Pentecost Part II –

Our awakening to the Spirit within consciously connects us to the Presence of I AM. The One from Whom the cosmos emerges, is sustained by, and exists within moment by moment. Saint Paul tells us this is the energy that raised Jesus from the dead. The season of Pentecost focuses on our learning to live, move, and have our being in this energy, the Holy Spirit. July’s quiet day will offer reflections on how to live in the Spirit.

Foundations of the Practice

Led by Rev. Jim Clark, Liza Bell, and Debbie Moore

Followed by:

Five Wednesday evening sessions (online)

“Intimacy with God” | 7:00-8:30pm | Z_o_o_m

*More than a meditation technique, Centering Prayer is a uniquely Christian practice of consenting to God’s presence and action within. During Centering Prayer, we learn to gently return our chattering minds, again and again, to our intention of just allowing God to love us. With consistent practice, we notice a growing sense of presence and peace infusing more of our waking hours. As God does God’s patient work within us, we gradually begin to transform habits and behaviors that have limited our ability to be the hands of Christ in the world.

“And the deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is beyond words, and it is beyond speech, and it is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity. We discover an older unity. Citizens, we are already one. But we imagine that we are not. So what we have to recover is our original unity. Who we have to be is who we are.” -Thomas Merton

The program is ecumenical and free of charge, but registration is required.

To register, contact Liza Bell.

WHAT IS EASTER?

This joyous season starts with Easter Day as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter season then continues for 50 days. Throughout this time, we hear the stories of how Jesus appeared to his followers in many ways after his resurrection; we hear what he taught them about how to live, and how to carry on without him. During this time, we also celebrate his Ascension into heaven (which Saint Barnabas also likes to move to a Sunday so we don’t miss the celebration!). This is followed by the arrival of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrate on Pentecost.

All are welcome to join us for this joyous celebration.

This unique service takes us literally out of the darkness of the tomb into the new light of Christ. We light the new fire to illustrate how Jesus’ light can never be extinguished fully. We carry the new light as we recall the many ways over time that God has saved us. During this service, we will witness the retelling of several sacred stories by some of the children of Saint Barnabas. Then we celebrate the bursting forth from the darkness in the Easter moment. This is the original Easter celebration. A dessert and appetizer feast will follow in Hutton Hall. One not to be missed!

The First Service of Easter is the day before our Easter Day worship, which takes place on Sunday, April 9 at 7am, 9am, and 11am MST both in-person (and online at 9am). For more information, please click here.

WHAT IS PALM SUNDAY?

Palm Sunday is a Sunday filled with emotional highs and lows. Jesus rides into Jerusalem as the people line the road with palm branches. They toss their cloaks before him to acknowledge him as their King. The Roman authorities fear and despise Jesus. They bring him to trial and crucify him.

On Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion we tell both stories. We acknowledge the highs and the lows so that Holy Week and Easter can be an acknowledgment of our brokenness and the surprise of joy. All are welcome.

Paul Found in His Letters https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/paul/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 23:45:10 +0000 https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/conversations-copy/ Continue reading Paul Found in His Letters]]> Lunch and Discussion with the Author

George Martin is an independent Pauline scholar and (more famously) father to Kate Fimbres, our Minister for Youth and Parish Life. The book, published in 2022 by Claremont Press, is the story of Paul in the history of the first century based on the seven letters all scholars agree he wrote. Martin explains why the accounts in the Book of Acts and in the Pastoral Epistles represent the “remembered Paul” coming decades after his letters. The letters reveal a different Paul in his own voice. With its unique focus on these seven letters this isn’t a biography of Paul, but it offers some amazing things about Paul in the context of Imperial Rome and pervasive slavery. This picture of Paul places women at his side as co-workers with him, and as active participants in leadership and worship. Paul’s travels that took him to Arabia and his desire to take the Gospel to Spain bring the history, economic, and social realities of the first century to the light of day. The book is available on Amazon.com (click here to purchase). After the discussion the author will be happy to sign books.

A morning virtual event with James Finley, Ph.D. In our time together Dr. Finley will lead us in a prayerful reflection on the healing stories in the Gospels that reveal and heal the truth of us as God’s beloved. We will explore the mystery of God as a Presence that protects us from nothing yet unexplainably sustains us in all things.

Dr. Finley will walk us through spiritual dimensions of the Gospels, showing us how they can guide and empower us to heal the traumas in our minds and hearts. In doing so, we can open ourselves to the Gospels’ spiritual depth of healing and our innate mercy toward ourselves, others, and all living things. Come join us for an intimate conversation with Dr. Finley.

Epiphany and the Transformation of Consciousness

The season of The Epiphany begins with the story of the Magi and ends with the Transfiguration of Jesus. Both stories are meant to move us beyond our normal seeing. Saint Paul invites the same when he prays … that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be so strengthened that you come to know the love that surpasses knowing. On this quiet day, we will explore how the practices of silence, the Lord’s Prayer, and praying the scriptures can remove our inner obstacles and open us more and more to boundless Presence, and boundless love.

December 4, 11, 18 9am | Hutton Hall and on Z_o_o_m

Advent is a season of preparation—a time to prepare our hearts and communities for the coming of Christ, the Almighty God who came among us poor and homeless—a stranger and a child. There may be no better time to reflect on how we embrace the Holy One who continues to draw near to us in the neighbor, the stranger, the refugee, or the one who seems most “other” to us.

Beloved Community is a vision of the possibilities of the Reign of God in our lives as we work towards growing loving, liberating, life-giving relationships across the human family of God. Following in the footsteps of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Episcopal Church invites all to explore the long-term possibilities of healing across difference, reconciliation, and justice.

During the four Sundays of Advent, you are invited to join the clergy and our youth for a sacred time of learning, storytelling, and listening. Our themes will include our own experiences of social difference, peace, forgiveness, reconciliation, truth-telling, and the possibilities of a community shaped by the love and concerns of God.

Registering is strongly suggested so that we can adequately prepare. However, you are invited to drop in and participate even if you cannot attend all four weeks.

Preparing for Advent

Saturday, November 12, 9:30 – 1pm | Sanctuary + Zoom

Join us for a Quiet Day two weeks before Advent – a perfect time to prepare ourselves for the new liturgical year. We will deepen into the meaning of Advent and explore quiet moments in Advent scripture as inspiration for our own quiet time with God. The day will include harp music.

The fall intensive retreat is designed for those with a well-established daily practice of Centering Prayer, or a similar daily practice of silence/meditation. Each day includes three 1 hour periods of Centering Prayer with walking meditation and evening compline. Silence is honored throughout each day, including mealtime, giving participants a sacred place to attend to the longings of their hearts and welcome God’s healing presence. A time for joy and renewal, the retreat includes ample time to walk the labyrinth, explore the beauty of the desert, read, journal, or simply rest. The opportunity to share one’s thoughts will be a joyful part of our closing ceremonies on Sunday.

Three healthy and delectable meals a day are offered, and the dining room is always open for coffee/tea, water bottle refills, and fresh fruit. Both single and shared room options are available.

Spiritual direction and massage are available by appointment.

Notably, while a member of the Supreme Court, she chaired the Court’s Legal Services Task Force, which recommended rules ultimately adopted by the Supreme Court that create a new tier of legal service providers and eliminate ER 5.4. She currently chairs the Court’s Attorney Regulation Advisory Committee and is a member of the National Conference of Bar Examiners Board of Trustees, the Board of Trustees of the Appellate Judges Education Institute, and has been elected to The American Law Institute. She has received many honors, including most recently being named one of a New Decade of Arizona’s Most Intriguing Women of the new decade (2022), an ABA Journal and ABA Center for Innovation Legal Rebel (2021), and the Arizona Capitol Times Woman of the Year (2020). Justice Timmer earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona, her J. D. magna cum laude, from Arizona State University Law School (now the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law), and a Masters in Judicial Studies from Duke University Law School. As an attorney, she primarily practiced commercial litigation with Phoenix-based law firms before joining the bench.

Do you feel God calling you into a new ministry to be the hands, feet, and listening ears for a broken world? Are you ready for a new commitment to your faith and in service to others?

Training to be a Community of Hope Lay Chaplain

A 12-week training for Community of Hope lay chaplains begins in October 2022, and Saint Barnabas is welcoming applications.

Community of Hope (COH) is a pastoral care model based on Benedictine Spirituality. The program builds a community of caregivers who are united in prayer and worship and shaped by the common practices and ethos of the Rule of Benedict.

COH equips and deploys lay chaplains to meet the varied pastoral needs in the broader community: loss, grief, illness, aging, life transition, loneliness, to name a few.

The training modules are a rich time of exploration and team building and will be led by parishioners, clergy, and experts in the field. If you’ve been looking for a way to serve at Saint Barnabas, maybe Community of Hope is for you. Learn More about Community of Hope.

With The Rev. Jim Clark

Sundays at 9am | Meets in our Parish Hall and on Z_o_o_m*

The brief letter to the Philippians tells the story of a deep affection between Saint Paul and the fledgling Philippian church. Paul heartfully thanks the Philippians for their generous support and devotion to the Gospel even as he tenderly urges them to remain steadfast in their “Gospel citizenship,” being ever mindful of their unity (“soul-harmony”), humility, generosity, servanthood, joy upon joy, unceasing prayer, and more. As they do, they shine as Lights in a troubled world, and they advance the Gospel.

We will engage Philippians following the method of The Art of Engaging Holy Scripture (taehs). Taehs is a lively, dynamic method of reading, prayer, meditation, study, and sharing that will immerse you in Saint Paul’s message. You will find yourself experiencing the message and being transformed by the Spirit.

No prior experience is needed. All are welcome.

The Lord’s Prayer & the Transformation of Consciousness

Today’s quiet day will explore how the Lord’s Prayer offers a moment-by-moment guide for transforming our daily consciousness into the awareness of God’s presence and eternal life right here right now.

All are welcome.

Learn to be a healing, reconciling presence … even, and especially, when discussing the most polarizing topics.

In this workshop series, you will learn …

               the power of the pause

the magic of a good question

               the secret of curiosity

You will learn how to …

              help people empty their heart

              feel profoundly heard

              experience listening’s healing power

keep difficult conversations going without becoming contentious

remain peaceful in the presence of distress

              leave conversations connected, not divided

Together, we will have an opportunity to practice these skills as we discuss the following topics:

• Climate Change October 1

• Gun Violence October 29

• Abortion November 19

• Racial Reconciliation January 7

Each session will have two guest presenters who will contribute different perspectives. Our goal will not be to solve anything, take action, or even promote action. Our goal will be to learn to listen profoundly … especially across substantial difference.

You will leave this series feeling equipped, empowered, and sent, knowing you know how to be a reconciling presence in a polarized world.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1

Climate change is a global threat on an unprecedented scale that we don’t fully understand. We may need radical changes to major institutions and personal lifestyles, implementing untested solutions that will have collateral impacts on economies, as well as political and social systems. However, changing nothing will potentially have an even greater and graver impact. Is an all-out effort to halt climate change and reverse its effects inevitable, or is more caution advisable with the collateral effects?

Read about our presenters for the day:

The Rev. Jim Clark

The Rev. Jim Clark will guide us through our workshop. He has been the Rector/Senior Pastor of Saint Barnabas since 2004. Jim authored The Art of Engaging Holy Scripture curriculum, which facilitates listening to holy scripture, to one another, and to one’s self. He has been leading listening workshops at Saint Barnabas since 2018.

The Rev. Pam Hyde

The Rev. Pam Hyde is an Episcopal priest, lawyer, and advocate for caring for the earth. Born and raised in Ohio, she has lived the majority of her life in Arizona. Pam is a graduate of Amherst College, Duke Law School, Duke School of the Environment, and Yale Divinity School, and has worked for nonprofit conservation groups, state government, and as the Assistant Rector at St. Francis in Green Valley. She currently serves on Bishop Reddall’s staff as the Canon for Creation Care for the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona.

Jim Rounds

Jim Rounds is President of Rounds Consulting Group. He regularly provides advice to policymakers at the Arizona state capitol and economic guidance to policy leaders across the country. His advising includes analyzing the associated dynamic benefits and costs from changes in public policy and consulting on environmental economics. Jim began his career as a Senior Economist and Senior Budget Analyst with the Arizona Joint Legislative Budget Committee and has been engaged in policy-related economics for more than two decades. Jim is a Senior Fellow at the Goldwater Institute, the President of the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority, and board member at Valley Partnership and the Arizona Small Business Association. He has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in economics from Arizona State University.

The Christian life is experienced through three kinds of deepening relationships as we walk the pilgrimage of faith. We continually come to know God as God is; we seek to know ourselves as God knows us; and we grow to know our neighbors as they are loved by God. You are warmly invited to join us for a series of Lenten book groups as we delve into exploring God’s relationship to us, our ability to see ourselves through God’s loving eyes, and our relationships to our neighbors.

Our book groups will meet Thursday evenings, beginning on March 10 and continuing through Maundy Thursday, April 14. We will begin with a simple meal in Hutton Hall at 5:30pm. Then our groups will convene from 6:00pm to 7:15pm. We will also offer a number of groups on Z_o_o_m.

The books will be available for purchase in the Saint Barnabas Book and Gift Shop. Stop by in early March to pick yours up!

Where God Happens: Discovering Christ in One Another by Rowan Williams

The place “where God happens,” according to the former Archbishop Rowan Williams’s reading of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, is between each other. Williams reveals the spirituality of the ancient Christians in a new light: as guides who have much to teach us about dealing with the anxieties, uncertainties, and sense of isolation that have become hallmarks of modern life.

Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman

Theologian and pastor Howard Thurman demonstrates how Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and how the example of Jesus’ life offers a solution to ending cycles of distrust and abuse. This book is famously known as the text that Martin Luther King Jr. sought inspiration from in the days leading up to the Montgomery bus boycott.

The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World by Desmond and Mpho Tutu

Wherever the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu went, he was inevitably asked about forgiveness. This book is his answer. Writing with his daughter, Mpho, an Anglican priest, Tutu lays out the significance of forgiveness, how it works, why everyone needs to know how to grant it and receive it, and why granting forgiveness is the greatest gift we can give to ourselves when we have been wronged.

The Heart of Centering Prayer: Nondual Christianity in Theory and Practice by Cynthia Bourgeault

Bourgeault takes us on a deep dive into the contemplative life and the practice of Centering Prayer. Drawing on Saint Simeon the New Theologian (10th-11th century) and The Cloud of Unknowing (14th century), Bourgeault locates Centering Prayer in the ancient eastern Christian tradition of Prayer of the Heart and the contemporary emphasis on nondual Christianity. The goal is not to be taken out of presence, she writes, and this volume helps us fine-tune our practice.

Open Mind, Open Heart by Thomas Keating

A classic in its own time, this volume defined and continues to invigorate the Centering Prayer movement. Keating introduces us to the contemplative dimension of the Gospel with insight and clarity, and he shows us how the practice of Centering Prayer prepares us for and awakens us to intimacy with God. An outstanding introduction to Christian contemplative spirituality.

With The Rev. Jim Clark

Great visions inspire us … and … they ask something of us.

Saint Paul saw a vision of a new humanity in Christ. A humanity of neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female. Jesus prayed “That they all may be one.”

We’ve all heard these words … after 2,000 years, have we lost sight, lost hope, lost the will to engage in what the vision asks of us?

In the divisive, contentiousness of our times, does the church offer a different way?

In Discovering Common Ground, Listening ‘till the Listening Starts, we will learn a different way.

We will learn not just what we might do but how we can do it. And we can. The skill is imminently learnable. We will practice, practice, practice. And we will learn to laugh at ourselves!

The skill of not just listening but profound listening. The gift of not just being listened to but of feeling heard. The joy that spontaneously arises in real relationship. The mysterious power that overtakes us as we move from superficial unity to profound harmony.

But, be not confused, the dream asks something of us … “I urge you, therefore, to walk worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and modesty and gentleness and meekness, with tranquil endurance bearing with one another in love, endeavoring, being zealous, with eagerness making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:1-3 paraphrased).

“I don’t know how to change the world … unless it is one relationship at a time. Starting with my self.” (Rev. Jim)

Workshop continues at 9am in Hutton Hall and on Z_o_o_m. Masks are not required for those who are vaccinated.

Seeing with the Eyes of the Heart IV

A mystery hidden from the foundation of the world was revealed to Saint Paul. He called it the mystery of the Gospel: In Christ, the All in all, all things are being re-created and united. Paul prayed the eyes of our hearts would be enlightened to experience this mystery, that our inner being would be made strong to know and experience boundless love. This was Saint Paul’s way of describing a transformation of consciousness, not just seeing something different but a different way of seeing. We will explore practices that prepare us to receive and live into and out from this mystery of love that transforms how we see and everything.

Once a month on Saturday, our campus goes quiet, becoming a meditative sanctuary for peace. Set aside some time to refresh your soul. Please bring your Bible. All are welcome! You can participate either in person at Saint Barnabas or via Z_o_o_m.

Z_o_o_m links are sent via email. You can join our mailing list by clicking here.

Do you have questions about the Bible or about Christianity and its roles and relationships in the world?

Most people do and most find it challenging to find answers.

Education for Ministry was developed by the School of Theology in Sewanee, Tennessee, to provide a means for people to work through their questions. This certificate program is led by mentors who provide a framework for the group to connect faith to their daily lives through reading and discussion. Meeting once a week in small groups with other Christians helps us learn how to think theologically, reflect faithfully, and speak civilly when confronted by beliefs and principles different from our own.

Being an EfM participant helps us learn how to articulate our faith and to shape our faith into action. We naturally find ministries that allow us to make a difference.

Since the inception of this unique program in 1975, more than 95,000 people have participated in it. EfM groups meet regionally in nearly every diocese of The Episcopal Church, in six provinces of the Anglican Communion, and in virtual classrooms with participants from across the globe.

Saint Barnabas EfM seminars begin annually in January. If you have a desire to learn more about Scripture, to build your relationship with God, to learn more about Christianity and its roles and relationships in the world, or to fill an indescribable spiritual ache or emptiness, apply now to become a cohort in our 2023 program.

To find out more about EfM call the office or send an email to Cynthia McKinley at CASMcKinley@aol.com

of following Jesus.

7:15pm on Thursday evenings
beginning September 23, 2021

This new series will be all about practice, practice, practice.

We’ll learn how our rich Episcopal heritage, dating all the way back to the first century (Yes! The first century; see, you’ve already learned something!), gives us tried and true wisdom for following Jesus.

Our heritage provides us with wisdom for the practice of

  • drawing close to Jesus in prayer
  • joining Jesus in serving and healing a hurting world
  • being an integral member of a community that makes a difference
  • responding generously to a generous God
  • sharing boundless, benevolent Presence with a hungry, thirsty world, and
  • thinking and learning about God.

We’ll explore how our celebrated “Three Legged Stool” of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason gives us dynamic spaciousness for finding God and our own selves.

We’ll learn to use our Book of Common Prayer’s guidance for prayer in virtually every situation we encounter.

We’ll also provide a framework for you to go deeply into why you are an Episcopalian and what it is about this particular way of following Jesus that keeps holding your soul and bringing you back.

This series will also serve as adult preparation for Baptism and Confirmation or for being received into the Episcopal Church from another tradition.

A Quiet Day with The Rev. Jim Clark
Saturday, May 8 at 9:30am – 1pm MST

Jesus’ Incarnation, Death, and Resurrection, and his outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost model unparalleled trust – trust in God and God in humanity. He trusted the God whose boundless Love for all that God had made would complete God’s dream for creation.

How can we develop such trust? As Thomas Keating said, “If we could just let God act, and trust about a million times more than we do now.” Today’s Quiet Day explores what such trust is and how it can grow in our hearts and lives. The morning includes teaching, prayer, and opportunity for questions.

The Church Year: Grace Revealed. Mark’s Gospel II

Mark’s Gospel begins with a dramatic epiphany of “Grace Revealed” in Jesus’ experience of being God’s beloved and in his confrontation with “Satan, demons, and the demonized.” In today’s Quiet Day we will explore our epiphany of Jesus as our model and how we receive the gift of being God’s beloved and the call to rid the earth of evil.

Sundays at 9:00am via Zoom | November 29 – December 20

This Advent, let’s approach the story of Christmas with wonder! Do Not Be Afraid invites Saint Barnabas friends of all ages to join in a devotional study perfect for the Advent season. During this creative and reflective time we will engage our sacred story while also making deeper connections with each other and with God.

We will engage in the program via weekly Zoom sessions hosted by our Rector, Jim Clark, and Sarah Petersen, Children’s Ministry Director. Sessions will be the four Sundays of Advent, Nov. 29 – Dec. 20 at 9am, during which kids, families, and adults will interact with reflection, discussions, and creative activities that all will enjoy. Inter-generational opening sessions will be followed by small group breakout sessions divided by type: kids, families, and adults.

From Illustrated Ministry, creators of the curriculum:

The inspiration for our theme comes from the angels’ message in the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke: “Do not be afraid!” This phrase is an instruction God gave to God’s people throughout their history, and it’s a message God continues to give to us today. This Advent, we invite you to explore what it looks like to hold hope when life feels really uncertain, to bring peace in the face of fear, to practice joy when everything seems burdensome, and to choose love, when sometimes, it’s just really hard. You’ll be invited to wonder more deeply about this classic story, to imagine some of the details that aren’t filled in for us, and to make connections to your own context this season.

Please Contact Sarah Petersen for questions and zoom login information.

Some questions to ponder: How do we make plans when it is impossible to make plans? How do we honor family and religious traditions if we cannot travel or need to social distance? What traditions and practices are we willing to suspend, just for this holiday season, making space for new traditions? Can we embrace something new to make this holiday season as meaningful as possible?

Sundays at 8:30am via Zoom | September 13-November 22

Registration Required

Beginning Sunday, September 13, our Episcopal Diocese of Arizona will offer a weekly formation program focusing on storytelling and themes of racial equality, specifically designed for elementary and middle-school-aged children (grades K-7) and their caregivers. This is a pivotal time for all of us—including, and perhaps especially, children— to listen to the stories of people of color and engage in a discussion of what it means to “respect the dignity of every human being” (a quote from the Book of Common Prayer, p. 305). We will engage in the program via a weekly Zoom session hosted by Ms. Sarah and our Sunday School teachers on Sundays at 8:30am, during which kids (and their parents, if so desired) will interact with games, discussions, and the occasional craft. The video lesson will be adapted from the Diocesan program.

Please Contact Sarah Petersen for questions and zoom login information.

The beautiful traditional Episcopal evensong liturgy will be filled with music from our choir. We will hear the Gospel stories of Jesus’ healing ministry and reflect on the call to seek healing in our own lives and to work for the healing of the world. Following a parish supper beginning at 5:15pm (come when you can), the worship service begins at 6:00pm in the sanctuary. The Book of Common Prayer tells us that the season of Lent is a time of “repentance and self-examination.” At the heart of the movement of returning to God is the realization that God is already at work mending and repairing our lives and the world around us.

On February 16, we will host an important conversation for all ages, but particularly for those parenting younger children. Children, Death, & Loss: How do we walk through hard times with our children? is an opportunity for parents to learn how to have tough conversations, grieve together with their children, and provide a ministry of presence to their children as they struggle with loss and death. All loss, particularly death, is huge and daunting to kids, and they will look to us to see how to best manage and embrace their feelings when those losses occur. The conversation will be led by Dr. Lisa Hildreth, a school psychologist at Scottsdale USD. Lunch and childcare will be provided.

Come to a Quiet Day for an introduction to what the Contemplative Life at Saint Barnabas might offer you, or to sustain you in that life. The day concludes with Holy Eucharist. Please bring your Bible. All are welcome. Learn More about Quiet Days.

THE ENNEAGRAM

Wednesday evenings, January 29 – March 25, 2020 (no meeting on Ash Wednesday)
7:00 – 8:30pm in the Saint Barnabas Chapel
ALL ARE WELCOME

The Enneagram is a tool for personal and spiritual growth. Its wisdom reveals the lens through which different personality types experience and interpret life. This deepens self-awareness, leading to compassion, understanding, and acceptance of oneself and others. The Enneagram has both religious and secular applications. Insight gained from studying it can profoundly transform lives and relationships.

This is a video series, featuring RICHARD ROHR, OFM, teaching the Enneagram from the Christian perspective. Fr. Rohr is a renowned contemporary spiritual teacher, a prolific author, and articulate speaker.
