Prayer

God of Wisdom, as we begin another school year I pause to ask for your blessing on all aspects of my life. I give you thanks for my school, my teachers, and my friends. I am grateful for pencils, crayons, notebooks, and for your gift of learning. Bless us all with curiosity, understanding, and respect. And bless my teachers, who support and encourage me and my friends. In this time of new beginnings, I ask your blessing on all of us learning how to learn online and outside our usual classrooms, and a blessing on the many devices we use to connect with our neighbors in a changing world. All this I ask in the name of Jesus, who as a child in the temple showed his longing to learn about you, and as an adult taught by story and example your great love for us. Amen

As part of a network of area churches, we partner with Family Promise and host families who are transitioning out of homelessness for a week at a time, 3-4 times per year, right here at Saint Barnabas. During that week, we provide lodging, all meals, and lots of fellowship and encouragement for Family Promise families and their children. Family Promise is one of only a few programs that work intentionally to keep families together as they experience homelessness, and their model has a 70% success rate.

You can help in lots of ways: plan and/or cook a meal, donate food, stay overnight as a contact in case any needs arise (we prepare you and give you separate sleeping quarters), bring an activity for children to do, play music or a movie to encourage rest and joy, donate travel sizes of toiletries that families can take with them, or simply be a friend to our guests. Serve and get to know families on their journey back to stability and homeFULLness.

Please contact Jane Gharibian  or Tom Tischer at (480) 231-0782 for information.

Gently faith-based, this one-week camp is filled with fun and engaging activities focusing on the creative process. Through our theme of Interstellar All Together, we will explore outer space as we embrace unity in the midst of diversity. Each camper will experience visual and performing arts as well as food science every morning.

Saint Barnabas Sports, an extended-day option organized by Saint Barnabas staff and volunteers, is an add-on that will end at 4pm. Extended-day campers will need to pack a lunch.

AGE GROUPS

Seedlings is a self-contained group that meets in the Children’s Center next to the playground. Seedlings are 3 and 4 year olds and must be potty trained.

Campers entering kindergarten and beyond in fall 2023 participate in the main camp, which includes a daily lesson and small groups engaging in workshops related to food science, visual arts and crafts, and performing arts such as drama, singing, and dance.

Junior Counselors (grades 7-10) need to submit an application and complete a Zoom interview. Junior Counselors (JCs) will participate in a training program prior to camp. WHAT IS PALM SUNDAY?

Palm Sunday is a Sunday filled with emotional highs and lows. Jesus rides into Jerusalem as the people line the road with palm branches. They toss their cloaks before him to acknowledge him as their King. The Roman authorities fear and despise Jesus. They bring him to trial and crucify him.

On Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion we tell both stories. We acknowledge the highs and the lows so that Holy Week and Easter can be an acknowledgment of our brokenness and the surprise of joy. All are welcome.

With The Rev. Jim Clark

Great visions inspire us … and … they ask something of us.

Saint Paul saw a vision of a new humanity in Christ. A humanity of neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female. Jesus prayed “That they all may be one.”

We’ve all heard these words … after 2,000 years, have we lost sight, lost hope, lost the will to engage in what the vision asks of us?

In the divisive, contentiousness of our times, does the church offer a different way?

In Discovering Common Ground, Listening ‘till the Listening Starts, we will learn a different way.

We will learn not just what we might do but how we can do it. And we can. The skill is imminently learnable. We will practice, practice, practice. And we will learn to laugh at ourselves!

The skill of not just listening but profound listening. The gift of not just being listened to but of feeling heard. The joy that spontaneously arises in real relationship. The mysterious power that overtakes us as we move from superficial unity to profound harmony.

But, be not confused, the dream asks something of us … “I urge you, therefore, to walk worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and modesty and gentleness and meekness, with tranquil endurance bearing with one another in love, endeavoring, being zealous, with eagerness making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:1-3 paraphrased).

“I don’t know how to change the world … unless it is one relationship at a time. Starting with my self.” (Rev. Jim)

Workshop continues at 9am in Hutton Hall and on Z_o_o_m. Masks are not required for those who are vaccinated.

Z_o_o_m credentials are provided via our weekly email. Sign up here to receive them!

Sundays at 9:00am via Zoom | November 29 – December 20

This Advent, let’s approach the story of Christmas with wonder! Do Not Be Afraid invites Saint Barnabas friends of all ages to join in a devotional study perfect for the Advent season. During this creative and reflective time we will engage our sacred story while also making deeper connections with each other and with God.

We will engage in the program via weekly Zoom sessions hosted by our Rector, Jim Clark, and Sarah Petersen, Children’s Ministry Director.  Sessions will be the four Sundays of Advent, Nov. 29 – Dec. 20 at 9am, during which kids, families, and adults will interact with reflection, discussions, and creative activities that all will enjoy. Inter-generational opening sessions will be followed by small group breakout sessions divided by type: kids, families, and adults.

From Illustrated Ministry, creators of the curriculum:

The inspiration for our theme comes from the angels’ message in the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke: “Do not be afraid!” This phrase is an instruction God gave to God’s people throughout their history, and it’s a message God continues to give to us today. This Advent, we invite you to explore what it looks like to hold hope when life feels really uncertain, to bring peace in the face of fear, to practice joy when everything seems burdensome, and to choose love, when sometimes, it’s just really hard. You’ll be invited to wonder more deeply about this classic story, to imagine some of the details that aren’t filled in for us, and to make connections to your own context this season.

Please Contact Sarah Petersen for questions and zoom login information.

Sundays at 8:30am via Zoom | September 13-November 22

Registration Required

Beginning Sunday, September 13, our Episcopal Diocese of Arizona will offer a weekly formation program focusing on storytelling and themes of racial equality, specifically designed for elementary and middle-school-aged children (grades K-7) and their caregivers. This is a pivotal time for all of us—including, and perhaps especially, children— to listen to the stories of people of color and engage in a discussion of what it means to “respect the dignity of every human being” (a quote from the Book of Common Prayer, p. 305). We will engage in the program via a weekly Zoom session hosted by Ms. Sarah and our Sunday School teachers on Sundays at 8:30am, during which kids (and their parents, if so desired) will interact with games, discussions, and the occasional craft. The video lesson will be adapted from the Diocesan program.

Stay tuned for when we will be able to travel again…and see memories of past years below!

Seek and serve Christ in all persons

Every summer, our youth and several adult volunteers embark on a six-day adventure to Los Angeles, CA “to seek and serve Christ in all persons.” Three days are spent in service at Alexandria House, a facility for women and children transitioning out of homelessness. Together we cook for residents, have a blast playing with kids, work on hands-on projects, and experience God’s love in a real community. There’s plenty of time for fun, friendship-building, discussing our experiences, and saying our prayers together. We also spend four evenings at The Midnight Mission experiencing first-hand what it means to proclaim God’s love as we serve dinner to over 500 homeless guests each night.

Your energy, participation, questions, experiences, and discussions in service make this mission trip extremely powerful. On our return, we share our experiences from the pulpit during Sunday worship services. Bring your friends and come ready for one of the best weeks of your year!

This time of pandemic been difficult for a host of reasons. Fear of the unknown, worry for our friends, family, and loved ones in the healthcare system and who work in essential jobs, and grief over the 100,000 souls lost. We know that at other times, when things have been hard, we would gather together and grieve, pray, and find hope again, together. And so we’re going to do that–just via Zoom instead of in-person. We hope you’ll join us.

Barnabas Day

Thursday, June 11 | 7pm

We will honor our patron saint, Barnabas, on his feast day, June 11, with a service of encouragement, support and togetherness to pray together in real time from our own homes. Recorded services can work in many situations, but this time, we just need to see each others’ faces.

In these services on February 26, we remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return by way of a cross of ashes being marked on our forehead. This reminder of our mortality sets us on our path through this subdued season in which we take a close look at ourselves and who God is calling us to be.

There are all sorts of things we take for granted every day. Imagine struggling every day just to acquire your essential needs. On Sunday, November 10, following the 10:15am service, all are welcome to help us put together emergency food packs for those in need. The packs will have assorted non-perishable food items that we will keep in our offices for when people come to the church for assistance during the business week. These bags will provide sustenance to get those in need through another couple of days as they work to make ends meet. Join us for the assembly day and always in prayer for those who are unemployed and underemployed in our community.

Come one, come all to help assemble prayer packets for our military servicemen and -women! Express your thanks for the sacrifices they make and show gratitude for their service. Everyone is invited to stop in for a few minutes or the entire hour – every pair of hands helps. Adults and children are also invited to write messages of gratitude to be included in these wonderful packets. It’s an activity the whole family can enjoy! Let us know you’re coming! Please email Mary Lou Luvisa to learn more.

Did You Know…?

In 2005, Saint Barnabas received its first American flag from one of the children of our parish who had brought it to us from a war zone where he had served. Out of that meaningful moment came a ministry of service and support for our military personnel around the globe. Our book & gift shop manager, Tammy Underwood, felt inspired to reach out to these brave souls and started carrying military prayer books in the bookstore that people could buy to donate. Then she found some neck-coolers that we could purchase to donate as well. Tammy then connected us with a state-wide organization that sends monthly care packages to our troops and started taking the donated items to be included. Later, she started partnering with Tony Conyers, one of our parish artists, who made copper crosses and prayer cards to include in these care packages. To date, we’ve sent 25,000 crosses overseas! They started working with our Tuesday Morning Workshop ladies who started putting the crosses and cards together with little return note cards and envelopes. Thanks to Tammy Underwood’s vision that goes back to that very first flag 13 years ago, we have had a connection with our servicemen and -women of both prayer and encouragement that you can now see displayed around Hutton Hall in their notes back to us. And you can see and read these messages in the book and gift shop anytime! Tammy keeps all the return letters in a binder so we never forget the deep impact we are making by these simple but important actions. So we encourage you to take part in this special part of Saint Barnabas. And we give thanks that Tammy was so inspired 13 years ago that she led us all to this ministry. See you in Hutton Hall.

WHAT IS MOPS AND MOMSNEXT?

Here at MOPS & MOMSNEXT at Saint Barnabas, we gather moms. We believe in the simple yet revolutionary idea that remarkable things happen when moms come together. That’s why we rally women, in their own neighborhoods, to help them become more brave, kind and honest, one gathering at a time.

So, whether you are a soon-to-be-mom, first-time mom or seventh-time mom, you are welcome here. Whether you are an adoptive mom, young mom, seasoned mom, foster mom, stepmom or any other type of mom, you are welcome here. We welcome moms with kids from newborns up to and including 6th graders!

WHAT TO EXPECT

A MOPS & MOMSNEXT meeting includes practical teaching through speakers, demonstrations or videos followed by group discussion and creative activities & service projects. Plus, there’s food … food YOU didn’t make! But more importantly, you’ll get to have honest conversations with other moms who understand the joys and frustrations of motherhood.

Curriculum Each meeting will have a topic to discuss, a service activity, or a live speaker.

Fellowship Local mom friends to talk to, laugh with, share advice with, and relate to. You are not alone!

Childcare Provided Onsite childcare is provided, free of charge, for kids aged 0-5. Nursing infants are welcome in either the nursery or at the meeting.

Mom’s Night Out (MNO) Sometimes moms need a night out! We hope you can join us for our Fall and Spring MNO!

WHEN WE MEET

The new year begins September 10, 2019, and continues through May 12 of 2020. Join us!

We meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday 9:30am – 11:30am (Childcare open from 9:00am – noon) September – May Come to The Other Cup and you will be greeted and welcomed in!

Sunday, March 18, 9am | Hutton Hall

Come to our Sunday forum with James Finley PhD as he discusses Depth Deprivation.

Depth depravation is a common state for most of us. We live in a fast paced often high demand society and It’s easy to miss the sacredness of the life we have been given. Most of us spend the majority of our days skirting around the outer circumference of the inner richness of the life we are living. It seems we usually live in shallow water We  suffer from DEPTH DEPRIVATION.

The problem is we tend not to notice this. Why?    Because when we slow down long enough to catch up with ourselves uncomfortable feelings have a chance to come out of hiding. We don’t want to think about our worries, our regrets, our grief, our longings. We tend to do what ever we can to shove them back down.     But if we brave it…..if we look long enough into that pain, we realize we are NOT suffering from depth deprivation. We realize we are suffering from Depth Avoidance.

So the question here is: How can we learn to move out of shallow water and into the depth of our being? How do we learn to live with a daily and abiding awareness of the God given godly nature of every breath and heartbeat?

That is the question.

Gentlemen: join other men of the parish in bringing some joy, exercise, and FUN to our children at youth by helping build a GaGa Ball Pit at Saint Barnabas! The workday starts at 7am with gathering and breaking into teams for the various jobs, and continues through the morning and day to finish the project. RSVP online at companyofmen.org/rsvp or email Dick Scott at slapshot14@gmail.com

GaGa Ball is believed to have originated in Israel, and has slowly spread across the USA over several decades. Ga means ‘hit’ or ‘touch’ in Hebrew. In the rules of GaGa Ball, the ball must touch the ground two times before it is considered ‘in play’, hence the name. GaGa Ball consists of a lightweight bouncy or foam ball and an octagon enclosure known as the GaGa Ball Pit. The object of the game is to hit the ball at or below opponents’ knees to eliminate them from the pit. The last one left in the pit is the winner.
