Prayer

God of Wisdom, as we begin another school year I pause to ask for your blessing on all aspects of my life. I give you thanks for my school, my teachers, and my friends. I am grateful for pencils, crayons, notebooks, and for your gift of learning. Bless us all with curiosity, understanding, and respect. And bless my teachers, who support and encourage me and my friends. In this time of new beginnings, I ask your blessing on all of us learning how to learn online and outside our usual classrooms, and a blessing on the many devices we use to connect with our neighbors in a changing world. All this I ask in the name of Jesus, who as a child in the temple showed his longing to learn about you, and as an adult taught by story and example your great love for us. Amen

Sunday, July 16 – Friday, July 21 | Ensenada, Mexico
We are excited to return to our medical mission ministry in Ensenada, Mexico. Our team will be made up of parishioners, Mayo Clinic and other medical providers and long term mission workers. We will establish our full clinic including nursing triage, medical providers, pharmacy, optometry, dental, children’s programming and a commissary for all of our patients. This special trip allows the team to provide medical assistance and especially the overarching sense of love and respect for each patient entering our clinic. If you are interested, please contact the valley-wide coordinator: Cindy Carter at 480.639.7551
Please Donate!

The items you most generously donate to the Medical Mission to Mexico are items we often take for granted to have and usually have in abundance.

  • Soap – an everyday item we use to clean our hands and bodies that not everyone has access to on a regular basis
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste – for both adults and children, giving access to dental health care
  • Eyeglasses – your used glasses and sunglasses can help provide needed sight improvement and can be fitted to the individual in need
  • Hats – we sure do understand the need to be protected from the sun and this is a great need in Mexico!
  • Shoes – imagine walking without shoes in the summer heat!

NEW REQUEST: T-shirts (all sizes, youth and adult)

Thank you for considering your gifts of any of these much needed items! These can be dropped off on Sunday in the boxes designated for the Mexico Medical Mission or to our church office during the week.

You can also make a monetary donation by clicking here.

Gently faith-based, this one-week camp is filled with fun and engaging activities focusing on the creative process. Through our theme of Interstellar All Together, we will explore outer space as we embrace unity in the midst of diversity. Each camper will experience visual and performing arts as well as food science every morning.

Saint Barnabas Sports, an extended-day option organized by Saint Barnabas staff and volunteers, is an add-on that will end at 4pm. Extended-day campers will need to pack a lunch.

In loving memory of their son and out of admiration and respect for the young people at Saint Barnabas, Jeff’s parents, Tammy and Jon, have established this scholarship fund to recognize and honor the young people of Saint. Barnabas who, like Jeff, loved being part of this community.

ECW (Episcopal Church Women) Scholarship ($500.00) A group of faithful church women who meet weekly mornings for fellowship and service opportunities. They love their church, each other and for over 30 years have provided college scholarships for our Saint Barnabas Youth.

Kelly O’Connor Swanson Scholarship ($500.00)Kelly loved and valued education and died at the young age of 50 in 2014. In her memory a college scholarship will be given to our Saint Barnabas youth on behalf of her mother Helen Swanson.

Anonymous Donor ($2,000) This Saint Barnabas parishioner loves our youth and values their participation at their church and their continuing journey of faith. This person values education and wants to help them as they pursue their college aspirations.

We will recognize them at the 10:15am service and honor their participation in our Saint Barnabas church community as well as their dedication to education and serving others.

Join us on Sunday, May 28, when together we will celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Please wear RED to church. In the midst of the lesson from Acts read during worship, we are all invited to stand up and read scripture passages aloud in different languages to replicate the probable cacophony that occurred that day 2,000 years ago. If you would like to participate in reading in a different language, please contact the Rev. Jennifer Tucker. Or you may pick up a copy of a reading on the narthex credenza on your way into the church. You do not need to speak a different language fluently, you simply need to be willing to join the fun. Don’t miss it! All are Welcome and all are welcome to wear red.

Ingathering

Sunday, May 7 | Both Services

United Thank Offering is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. The blue boxes are used as a way to give thanks daily. On May 7, we will gather our boxes, bless them, and send them off to places near and far to reach those in need, including within our own diocese. Pick up another one to fill with your daily gratitude again! This is a meaningful practice for all ages and children are invited to participate. You can find out more about UTO’s global work at THIS LINK. Thank you!

UTO Prayer
Gracious God, source of all creation, all love, all true joy: accept, we pray, these outward signs of our profound and continuing thankfulness for all of life. Bless those who will benefit from these gifts through the outreach of the United Thank Offering, and keep each of us ever thankful for all the blessings of joy and challenges that come our way; through Him who is the greatest gift and blessing of all, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Foundations of the Practice

Saturday April 22, 9:30 – 1:30 pm | In our Saint Barnabas Chapel

Led by Rev. Jim Clark, Liza Bell, and Debbie Moore

Followed by:

Five Wednesday evening sessions (online)

“Intimacy with God” | 7:00-8:30pm | Z_o_o_m

*More than a meditation technique, Centering Prayer is a uniquely Christian practice of consenting to God’s presence and action within. During Centering Prayer, we learn to gently return our chattering minds, again and again, to our intention of just allowing God to love us. With consistent practice, we notice a growing sense of presence and peace infusing more of our waking hours. As God does God’s patient work within us, we gradually begin to transform habits and behaviors that have limited our ability to be the hands of Christ in the world.

“And the deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is beyond words, and it is beyond speech, and it is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity. We discover an older unity. Citizens, we are already one. But we imagine that we are not. So what we have to recover is our original unity. Who we have to be is who we are.” -Thomas Merton

The program is ecumenical and free of charge, but registration is required.

WHAT IS EASTER?

This joyous season starts with Easter Day as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Easter season then continues for 50 days. Throughout this time, we hear the stories of how Jesus appeared to his followers in many ways after his resurrection; we hear what he taught them about how to live, and how to carry on without him. During this time, we also celebrate his Ascension into heaven (which Saint Barnabas also likes to move to a Sunday so we don’t miss the celebration!). This is followed by the arrival of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrate on Pentecost.

All are welcome to join us for this joyous celebration.

This unique service takes us literally out of the darkness of the tomb into the new light of Christ. We light the new fire to illustrate how Jesus’ light can never be extinguished fully. We carry the new light as we recall the many ways over time that God has saved us. During this service, we will witness the retelling of several sacred stories by some of the children of Saint Barnabas. Then we celebrate the bursting forth from the darkness in the Easter moment. This is the original Easter celebration. A dessert and appetizer feast will follow in Hutton Hall. One not to be missed!

WHAT IS PALM SUNDAY?

Palm Sunday is a Sunday filled with emotional highs and lows. Jesus rides into Jerusalem as the people line the road with palm branches. They toss their cloaks before him to acknowledge him as their King. The Roman authorities fear and despise Jesus. They bring him to trial and crucify him.

On Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion we tell both stories. We acknowledge the highs and the lows so that Holy Week and Easter can be an acknowledgment of our brokenness and the surprise of joy. All are welcome.

Paul Found in His Letters https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/paul/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 23:45:10 +0000 https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/conversations-copy/ Continue reading Paul Found in His Letters]]> Lunch and Discussion with the Author

George Martin is an independent Pauline scholar and (more famously) father to Kate Fimbres, our Minister for Youth and Parish Life. The book, published in 2022 by Claremont Press, is the story of Paul in the history of the first century based on the seven letters all scholars agree he wrote. Martin explains why the accounts in the Book of Acts and in the Pastoral Epistles represent the “remembered Paul” coming decades after his letters. The letters reveal a different Paul in his own voice. With its unique focus on these seven letters this isn’t a biography of Paul, but it offers some amazing things about Paul in the context of Imperial Rome and pervasive slavery. This picture of Paul places women at his side as co-workers with him, and as active participants in leadership and worship. Paul’s travels that took him to Arabia and his desire to take the Gospel to Spain bring the history, economic, and social realities of the first century to the light of day. The book is available on Amazon.com (click here to purchase). After the discussion the author will be happy to sign books.

The journey through Lent into Easter is a journey with Jesus. We are baptized into his life, self-giving, and death; then, we rise in hope to life transformed. Beloved Community is a vision of the possibilities of the Reign of God in our lives as we work towards growing loving, liberating, life-giving relationships across the human family of God. Following in the footsteps of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Episcopal Church invites all to explore the long-term possibilities of reconciliation, justice, and healing across differences.

During the five Sundays of Lent, you are invited to join the clergy for a sacred time of learning, storytelling, and listening. It is our hope that we will be open to God’s blessing and find ourselves growing into the vibrant life of the Christ we welcome and follow, this Lent and always.

All are welcome to participate even if you cannot attend all five weeks.

A morning virtual event with James Finley, Ph.D. In our time together Dr. Finley will lead us in a prayerful reflection on the healing stories in the Gospels that reveal and heal the truth of us as God’s beloved. We will explore the mystery of God as a Presence that protects us from nothing yet unexplainably sustains us in all things.

Dr. Finley will walk us through spiritual dimensions of the Gospels, showing us how they can guide and empower us to heal the traumas in our minds and hearts. In doing so, we can open ourselves to the Gospels’ spiritual depth of healing and our innate mercy toward ourselves, others, and all living things. On March 5, Saint Barnabas will commission our class of six Community of Hope Lay Chaplains. Our new Lay Chaplains are available to serve the community as guides and companions throughout all of life’s ups and downs. Help us celebrate these ministers at our 10:15am service.

Lay Chaplains, who have received training through the Community of Hope, are here to walk with you through any hardship. We are here for you when you encounter any of life’s tough spots:

  • death
  • loss of a job or a dream
  • divorce
  • a move you didn’t choose
  • even a seemingly happy occasion, like the birth of a child, that can make you feel overwhelmed or alone.

If you feel like there is no one to talk to, or that your family or friends have heard enough already, give us a call. We are here for you.

To be connected to a Community of Hope Lay Chaplain, please contact the Rev. Jennifer Tucker or call the church office, (480) 948-5560

“What we do for the African American community benefits everybody. Anything that knocks down barriers is a good thing.” -Br. Lee Hughes, OP

Bl. (Blessed) Absalom Jones holds a special place in history as a pioneer in civil liberty and service. Born into slavery in Delaware in 1746, Jones purchased freedom for his family and began attending St. George’s Methodist Episcopal congregation which was, nominally, an interracial congregation. However, one Sunday, African American congregants were asked to move from their seats on the first floor to the upper balcony – where they would not be seen. Following this incident, Jones left the congregation but continued to be an active member of the Episcopal Church, going on to be ordained as the first African-American Episcopal priest.

Since his death on February 13, 1818, commemorating the Feast Day of Absalom Jones is one symbolic step we can take as a community toward ensuring that such treatment of African Americans – or any “other” group – is not only never repeated but that we proactively and continuously course-correct to avoid it, always striving to improve equality, fairness and representation for all people.

A celebration of Jones’s Feast Day will take place in the Sanctuary. The service of liturgy and Holy Eucharist is hosted by The Karl and Virginia Washington Arizona Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, in partnership with the Episcopal Church’s Diocese of Arizona.

The Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie

The Rt. Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall, sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona, will preside over the service, with a message from guest preacher the Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie, who grew up in Johannesburg under apartheid. Music by Saint Barnabas featuring Ms. Jackie Island of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Phoenix who will sing “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.”

This event will be open to all. Questions? Contact Br. Lee Hughes, OP.

Meet Our Nominees for Vestry and Diocesan Convention

As prescribed by our bylaws, the Vestry Nominating Committee, led by Chair Karen Steckler, has produced a slate of nominees this fall to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Episcopal Parish of Saint Barnabas on the Desert on January 22, 2023 at 11:30am in Hutton Hall. We are blessed by the dedication of these parishioners to their church. When you see them on our grounds, thank them for their service!

Ten parishioners are nominated to serve as 2023 Diocesan Convention delegates and alternates. Nominees to attend the 2023 convention as Delegates: Margaret Beresford, Larry Erickson, Willie Francis, Gretchen Kitchel, and Ed Wimmer. Nominated as alternates (voting in the event a Delegate is unable to serve): Suzy Erickson, Shan Francis, Matt Owens, Fran Patton, and Judie Wimmer. In addition to these elected roles, Rector Jim Clark has named Don Henninger to continue as our Senior Warden.

Here is the list of the Vestry Candidates for 2023/2024/2025.

Meet the four parishioners nominated for service on the Saint Barnabas Vestry:

Nancy Burton

I joined Saint Barnabas in 2019 after we moved to Scottsdale from Ohio. The church offers a place for me to feel at home with its friendly community, social activities, and faith education. I especially like the worship services, music and concerts, and group studies including EfM and TAEHS. I look forward to our fellowship, growing together in faith, and serving at Saint Barnabas.

Dan Colton

I have been a member of Saint Barnabas since 1967, when my family moved to Arizona from Indiana. I’ve been active in various facets of the church, including serving as Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee for 14 years (1996-2010) and now serving as a committee member. I previously served as vestry member from 2002-2005.

Peggy Iacobelli

I have been married to cradle Episcopalian, Dirck, for almost 49 years. As a family, we have been members of Saint Barnabas since the fall of 1982, and I was confirmed here in 1984. I have been a member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, a youth group coordinator, and served on the ECW board and the diocesan ECW Board. I have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Family Promise. I was a founding member of the Bell Choir, and am happy to be playing with them again. I am Chair of the Memorial Acceptance and Fine Arts Committee and I served on the Vestry previously from 2000-2003.

Frank Nightingale

It has been a tremendous blessing to attend Saint Barnabas for nearly ten years. We are called to be disciples of Christ. The people of our parish, our superb Clergy, our ministries, dedicated staff, and unmatched grounds make that call easy! It would be a honor to serve on the Saint Barnabas Vestry.

WORSHIP & EUCHARIST | Wednesday, December 21, 7:00pm

Join us on the shortest day and longest night of the year to make room for our sorrow and hope as we offer our whole selves — even what is broken in us — to the Holy Child of Bethlehem.

This service offers a space for grief and sadness during the holiday season, contemplative choral and instrumental music, and a candle-lighting ritual for personal memorials of loss. The Service of the Longest Night gives space for the meaning of Advent — our saving hope promises to come as a light that our darkest moments cannot conquer. Christ is near. We are not alone.

An Advent Journey | Preparing to Become Beloved Community https://saintbarnabas.org/all-events/advent/ Mon, 14 Nov 2022 17:35:48 +0000 https://saintbarnabas.org/?post_type=all-events&p=20551 Continue reading An Advent Journey | Preparing to Become Beloved Community]]> Advent Faith Formation

December 4, 11, 18 9am | Hutton Hall and on Z_o_o_m

Advent is a season of preparation—a time to prepare our hearts and communities for the coming of Christ, the Almighty God who came among us poor and homeless—a stranger and a child. There may be no better time to reflect on how we embrace the Holy One who continues to draw near to us in the neighbor, the stranger, the refugee, or the one who seems most “other” to us.

Beloved Community is a vision of the possibilities of the Reign of God in our lives as we work towards growing loving, liberating, life-giving relationships across the human family of God. Following in the footsteps of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Episcopal Church invites all to explore the long-term possibilities of healing across difference, reconciliation, and justice.

During the four Sundays of Advent, you are invited to join the clergy and our youth for a sacred time of learning, storytelling, and listening. Our themes will include our own experiences of social difference, peace, forgiveness, reconciliation, truth-telling, and the possibilities of a community shaped by the love and concerns of God.

Registering is strongly suggested so that we can adequately prepare. However, you are invited to drop in and participate even if you cannot attend all four weeks.

The fall intensive retreat is designed for those with a well-established daily practice of Centering Prayer, or a similar daily practice of silence/meditation. Each day includes three 1 hour periods of Centering Prayer with walking meditation and evening compline. Silence is honored throughout each day, including mealtime, giving participants a sacred place to attend to the longings of their hearts and welcome God’s healing presence. A time for joy and renewal, the retreat includes ample time to walk the labyrinth, explore the beauty of the desert, read, journal, or simply rest. The opportunity to share one’s thoughts will be a joyful part of our closing ceremonies on Sunday.

Three healthy and delectable meals a day are offered, and the dining room is always open for coffee/tea, water bottle refills, and fresh fruit. Both single and shared room options are available.

Spiritual direction and massage are available by appointment.

Do you feel God calling you into a new ministry to be the hands, feet, and listening ears for a broken world? Are you ready for a new commitment to your faith and in service to others?

Training to be a Community of Hope Lay Chaplain

A 12-week training for Community of Hope lay chaplains begins in October 2022, and Saint Barnabas is welcoming applications.

Community of Hope (COH) is a pastoral care model based on Benedictine Spirituality. The program builds a community of caregivers who are united in prayer and worship and shaped by the common practices and ethos of the Rule of Benedict.

COH equips and deploys lay chaplains to meet the varied pastoral needs in the broader community: loss, grief, illness, aging, life transition, loneliness, to name a few.

The training modules are a rich time of exploration and team building and will be led by parishioners, clergy, and experts in the field. If you’ve been looking for a way to serve at Saint Barnabas, maybe Community of Hope is for you. Learn More about Community of Hope.

With The Rev. Jim Clark

Sundays at 9am | Meets in our Parish Hall and on Z_o_o_m*

The brief letter to the Philippians tells the story of a deep affection between Saint Paul and the fledgling Philippian church. Paul heartfully thanks the Philippians for their generous support and devotion to the Gospel even as he tenderly urges them to remain steadfast in their “Gospel citizenship,” being ever mindful of their unity (“soul-harmony”), humility, generosity, servanthood, joy upon joy, unceasing prayer, and more. As they do, they shine as Lights in a troubled world, and they advance the Gospel.

We will engage Philippians following the method of The Art of Engaging Holy Scripture (taehs). Taehs is a lively, dynamic method of reading, prayer, meditation, study, and sharing that will immerse you in Saint Paul’s message. You will find yourself experiencing the message and being transformed by the Spirit.

No prior experience is needed. All are welcome.

We remember the 13th century ministry of St. Francis to our four-legged friends by way of our annual Blessing of the Animals. Invite your friends with pets. Animals of all shapes and sizes are welcome to this unique outdoor worship service–weather permitting!

Learn to be a healing, reconciling presence … even, and especially, when discussing the most polarizing topics.

In this workshop series, you will learn …

               the power of the pause

the magic of a good question

               the secret of curiosity

You will learn how to …

              help people empty their heart

              feel profoundly heard

              experience listening’s healing power

keep difficult conversations going without becoming contentious

remain peaceful in the presence of distress

              leave conversations connected, not divided

Together, we will have an opportunity to practice these skills as we discuss the following topics:

• Climate Change October 1

• Gun Violence October 29

• Abortion November 19

• Racial Reconciliation January 7

Each session will have two guest presenters who will contribute different perspectives. Our goal will not be to solve anything, take action, or even promote action. Our goal will be to learn to listen profoundly … especially across substantial difference.

You will leave this series feeling equipped, empowered, and sent, knowing you know how to be a reconciling presence in a polarized world.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1

Climate change is a global threat on an unprecedented scale that we don’t fully understand. We may need radical changes to major institutions and personal lifestyles, implementing untested solutions that will have collateral impacts on economies, as well as political and social systems. However, changing nothing will potentially have an even greater and graver impact. Is an all-out effort to halt climate change and reverse its effects inevitable, or is more caution advisable with the collateral effects?

Read about our presenters for the day:
